Want to take over an old cinema?
The leasehold for the former ABC cinema building, at Ward’s End, is on the market with leisure property specialist, Fleurets
The building has a rich history - It first opened 77 years ago as the Regal cinema and stood on the site of Ward’s End Hall.
The cinema was designed by William Riddell Glen and was opened by the Mayor of Halifax, Alderman Frank Watkinson. In 1961 the Regal transformed into the ABC and in 1976 – a year after Odeon closed – the building was converted into a three-cinema complex.
In 1986 the Cannon chain bought the ABC cinema chain from Thorn EMI and a year later the Halifax ABC became the Cannon.
Then in 1996 the Cannon became the ABC again, but the cinema only lasted only another six years and the ABC closed in June 2002, sounding a death knell for Halifax’s only cinema at the time.
The building recently housed the Chicago Rocks nightclub.
