Not just a chef, but an entertainer too - school cook wins national contest
A SCHOOL chef has come up with a comic idea to get children into healthy eating – and has won a national competition.
Paul Tyler, catering supervisor at Lightcliffe Primary School, created the High Five Club in a bid to make eating five a day fun.
Mr Tyler hands out certificates in assembly to children who have done well trying new foods and eating their dinner.
He shows them card tricks if they clean their plate, gives out sticker badges and produces the High Five Comic which tells of the adventures of the High Five Club.
And now the school has won £500 in a national competition. The money will be spent on new tables for the children's seating area.
Mr Tyler said: "I was thrilled to bits that we won the competition. It is nice to get a bit of recognition.
"I try to make food really interesting for the children. Not only do I feed them but I also have to be their entertainer."
Mr Tyler took over as catering supervisor in March 2006 and implemented the Government's healthy-eating requirements.
