YOUNG people from Calderdale are set to spend their summer volunteering in America.
Lamine Merakech, 20, from Halifax, will spend nine weeks at Camp Hillside, New York, as a general counsellor as part of the Camp America scheme.

The Calderdale College student said: "What a wicked feeling. I'm so excited."

The Camp America programme sends young people to help out in American summer camps on nine-week placements.

Miss Merakech will be joined in America by another Halifax resident, Laurie Cocker. She will be spending her time working at Camp Tioga, Pennsylvania, as a lifeguard.

Volunteers receive free accommodation and meals and are given the chance to tour the US at the end of placements.

That is total slave labour. Free food and accomodation? Big deal. The American camp cousellors who work at these camps receive very reasonable salaries. I know this for a fact. The Americans are importing essentially free labour from overseas.

If you want to do fulfilling volunteer work, get out to Africa.
