THESE talented youngsters played and sang their hearts out in a bid to win the chance to perform at the Royal Albert Hall.
They were just some of the musicians and singers from across Calderdale and beyond who took part in the Halifax Regional Festival of Music for Youth.

The event – hosted by Calderdale Music Service at Heath Training and Development Centre, Free School Lane, Halifax – was the first round of a contest which could see will see the finalists taking to the stage in London.

Stephen Langden, head of Calderdale Music Service, said: "It's a really good to see young people coming from all around the region to perform here.

"The standard has been good. We've been doing this event for a number of years and the standards are always very high."

Glenis Ireland, senior teacher at the music service, said: "We;re delighted to be able to host the event in Halifax."

All the performances during the day-long festival were watched by two adjudicators who will pick some groups to appear at another festival in Birmingham in July.

A selected few from that performance will then be invited to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in November.

The groups performing included the All Saints 12 from All Saint's Primary School, Skircoat Green, Halifax.

Its music co-ordinator, Thelma Bateman, said the festival was a good opportunity for pupils to perform alongside other youngsters.

"I thought they did brilliantly well and have worked really hard," she added.

Other groups taking part included Calder High New Music Group, Calderdale Youth Orchestra, Calderdale Fiddle Group, Calderdale Youth Jazz Orchestra, Parkinson Lane Singers and Calderdale Youth Guitar Ensemble.

The groups selected for the next stage of the festival are expected to hear in May.
