Autumn spectacular launches Poppy Appeal

Not only will it be linked to the launch of the Poppy Appeal to help the Royal British Legion but it is the 70th Anniversary of this iconic concert series – and finally a military link has evolved to reflect the great relief at the ending of wartime hostilities in 1945, the very year that these concerts commenced.

That military element is through the unique appearance as guests this year of The Band of the King’s Division, formed only last year as part of the British Army’s restructuring of its musical divisions.

The band is based at Weeton Barracks, Preston, and in a short amount time has already proved a huge success.

Its musicians are certain to look splendid in their red stage tunics ranked alongside the famous purple and gold of ‘B & R’.

To add even more glamour to this special occasion, in Huddersfield, the guest conductor will be former RAF Principal Director of Music, Rob Wiffin OBE, who is relishing the opportunity of leading two great bands in an exciting combination.

Under the title ‘Celebration’ the music will truly reflect the decades that have passed since famous conductor Eric Ball took that first Massed Bands concert on October 13, 1945.

So this really will be an event not to miss and tickets are first on general sale at Ryecorn Wholefoods shop, Bethel St, Brighouse on Saturday, September 5 (10am to noon only).

From Wednesday, September 9 they will go on sale at Kirklees Council outlets in Huddersfield, Holmfirth, Dewsbury, Batley and Cleckheaton.

Don’t miss the Orchestra of Opera North together with soprano Emma Bell and conductor Aleksandar Markovic as they launch the Kirklees Concert Season in high heroic style with Richard Strauss’ tone poem Ein Heldenleben, which charts the progress of its hero’s life in thrilling fashion. There will also be two pieces by Richard Wagner - Rienzi Overture and Wesendonck Lieder.
