Avast! Penzance piratesare preparing to board

The society is presenting the Broadway version of The Pirates of Penzance, which provides an irreverent twist on the old Gilbert and Sullivan favourite.

Taking the part of the Pirate King is Ashley Davis, of Bailiff Bridge, who played the

lead in the society’s Me and My Girl two years ago. Society members have thoroughly enjoyed themselves at rehearsals trying to talk like pirates and hope their enjoyment will rub off on the audiences.

The Broadway version of ‘Pirates’ provided a breakthrough performance in Manchester for Michael Ball, where Paul Nicholas played the Pirate King, a role for which Kevin Kline won awards on Broadway.

It was appropriate the new version should have been launched on Broadway, as the

original version had also premiered there more than 100 years before.

The other lead players in the society’s production are Richard Armstrong (Frederic), Laura Crowther (Mabel), Steve Convey (Major-General), Sue Morris (Ruth), Peter McDonnell (Sergeant of Police) and Steven Greenwood, a veteran of many G and S productions, who plays Sam.

Completing the characters are Rachel Rogers (Edith), Pippa Davis (Kate) and Adele Hill (Isabel). Choreography is by Alexandra Townend of Todmorden.

The show runs from Wednesday November 13 to 16 including a Saturday matinee. The box office is on 01422 351158.
