Capturing power of the dragon ...

Living with the Dragon - a solo photographic exhibition by Clive Horsman - will be on display at Square Chapel Centre for the Visual Arts until November 30.

Horsman has spent more than four years living and working in Shanghai running a landscape design team of 70 staff for Brittish company Atkins.

He took early retirement in March and spent six weeks travelling and taking photographs in China - with an exhibition in Shanghai in May - before returning to the Luddenden valley in the summer.

The outcome is his latest exhibition of black and white photography called Living with the Dragon which opened in Halifax this week.

Clive explains - “In the west, a dragon is usually perceived as a fire-breathing monster. Not so in China where, by contrast, dragons are symbolic of potent and auspicious power, strength and good luck.

“Historically the Emperor was considered the Golden Dragon and as such was all powerful. However, in modern China, the dragon symbolises opportunity and success - the very drivers of the country’s incredible growth over the past 30 years with economic power and opportunity transferred to the people.

“These photographs provide a reflection of my time in Shanghai - living and working alongside The Dragon.”
