History to repeat itself at Parish Church

The event was described as “a musical offering to be remembered” in the Brighouse Echo at the time.

The two organs were played in concert by Dr Philip Marshall who was then the organist at Lincoln Cathedral and Martin Singleton who was assistant organist at Chester Cathedral.

Now just over 30 years later a similar recital will take place on September 4 once again involving Martin Singleton, but with Robert Gower, the organist at Nottingham Cathedral taking the place of Philip Marshall who died in 2005.

Martin Singleton is now director of music at St Anselm’s Parish Church, Hatch End and organ tutor at Harrow School.

An inspiring programme will include items composed for two organs and transcriptions of popular organ pieces including Robert Gower’s arrangement of “Orb and Sceptre” composed by William Walton for the Queen’s Coronation.

Judging by the requests for this repeat performance this double organ recital should be just as popular as the 1984 recital.
