The Thing About Psychopaths, which will be staged at Square Chapel Centre for the Arts on Sunday, April 14, was penned by Scottish-Ghanaian writer Ben Tagoe, who in 2000 spent a short time on remand in a Dublin jail.

His experiences of overcrowded buildings, being locked up for 22 hours a day and “slopping out” spurred him to write the searing play about power and empathy in a system driven by a free market economy.

Rod Dixon, artistic director of Leeds-based Red Ladder Theatre Company for the past six years, said of the play: “The piece describes the situation that we have got in the country - the ruthless financial section of society and everyone else is paying for it.

“There is a checklist of how to recognise a psychopath and corporations tick off most of them.

“It is quite a dark piece but it has also got comic moments.”

Red Ladder, a radical theatre company with 40 years of history, champions new writing and is acknowledged as one of Britain’s leading national touring companies producing high quality theatre contributing to social change and global justice.
