Cricket icon play comes to Elland

A Yorkshire war hero’s last game of cricket for his county on the eve of World War Two has been turned into an evocative play which will tour iconic cricket grounds from August 20, including Elland (Sept 2 - two performances).

The Last Match, written by Colin Philpott and Kit Monkman and praised by umpiring legend, Dickie Bird tells the story of Hedley Verity and the 1939 county match between Sussex and Yorkshire played on the day Germany invaded Poland.

The production evokes the emotions of a generation clinging to the last moments of peace.

Dickie Bird said: “The Last Match tells the sad story of Hedley Verity, who was lost because of the war. The play is really very poignant and well worth seeing.”

Colin Philpott, said: “We are thrilled to be able to bring this story to life on the stage and to put on the production at iconic venues like Headingley as well as in Elland and Bradford. We look forward to welcoming both cricket lovers and general theatre-goers.”

Actor, Al Barclay, who starred in Stephen Fry’s Bright Young Things will play Hedley Verity - a star of both county and country.

The Last Match goes on tour from August 20 in Sussex and Yorkshire.
