Godfrey's game for raising cash

Award-winning Halifax theatre company Talking Stock Productions begins a new tour in Halifax next week in a joint venture with Actors' Workshop raising money for The Workshop's Youth section plus other charities.

A new, full-length version of the much-loved production ‘Godfrey’s Last Stand’ by Alan Stockdill (who also directs the piece) premieres at The Workshop, for a five-night run from Nov 5-12 before commencing a short tour of the north of England.

“Dreams can’t come true unless you’ve got the people who matter to you in them with you,” says Yorkshire Dales local league cricket umpire Godfrey Shackleton. Since he was a lad all Godfrey ever wanted to do was to officiate a test match between England and Australia. When he wins over £3m on the lottery he wangles a way to do just that.

Originally a one-act play it has already raised a lot of money for a number of charities and now features a new character, Godfrey’s 17-year-old grandson, Justin, who was mentioned in the first version - but never appeared.

Following the five-night fundraiser for Actors’ Workshop Youth ‘Godfrey’s Last Stand’ will be touring to Settle, Glossop, Newton-in-Bowland and Morecambe raising money for Sporting Memories Network and the Halifax Playhouse LIFT Appeal.
