Stage debut for the fearsome Witches

How can we recognise a witch? Is she the green-faced hag in the pointed hat - or is she likely to be more cleverly disguised than that?

That’s the question posed by Roald Dahl in his children’s classic ‘The Witches’ which, as adapted for the stage by David Wood, will be presented at Halifax Playhouse from Thursday, February 11 to Saturday 13. Playhouse Stage Training, Halifax Thespians’ youth arm, has chosen ‘The Witches’ for its first full show on the main stage.

The director is Mike Dellenie and the cast includes Chris Main, Julie Johnson, Aleksandra Trcinske, Ibraheem Ahmed, Davy Brewster, Roxanne Hill, Nikola Mis, Luke Beevers, Emma Hughes and Will Hayes.

In 1990 ‘The Witches’ was made into a successful children’s film starring Anjelica Huston and Rowan Atkinson.

In the story one young boy and his grandmother have learned how to recognise the vile witches, however clever their disguises, but will they be able to get rid of them for good?

Playhouse ST will introduce the audience to the most frightful gang of witches imaginable, the vulgar Jenkins family, the wise grandmother - and a heroic young boy.

‘The Witches’ will be staged at 7.30pm with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.
