Wonderful night of classics

Rococo is usually taken to mean playful, witty or graceful and Tchaikovsky’s “Variations on a Rococo Theme” is no exception to this.

Todmorden Orchestra will be joined by cellist Jane Lindsay at its concert in the Town Hall at 7.30 on Saturday November 7 to play what the composer intended as a tribute to his beloved Mozart.

Educated initially at Chetham’s, Jane has won various prestigious awards and performed with several of the great orchestras including an appearance at the 2014 BBC Proms.

The concert opens with Rossini’s William Tell Overture with its wonderful “March of the Swiss Soldiers” and the haunting cor anglais solo “Call to the Cows”.

Completing the programme is a symphony of which its composer said: “Must be capable of stirring the world”.

The dramatic expression and sombre uncertainty of Dvorak’s 7th symphony are in stark contrast to its immediate neighbours, numbers 6 and 8. The absence of Slav-inspired melodies allows a meandering of his soul and produces a masterful work.

The concert is dedicated to the memory of Ann Davies, a much loved and long serving member of the orchestra who died suddenly and unexpectedly last month.

The orchestra will be under the baton of its regular conductor, Nicholas Concannon-Hodges with leader Andrew Rostron.
