Drive-in cinema launched in West Yorkshire showing films like Toy Story, Shrek and The Greatest Showman

The Driving Movie event will be held on the first weekend of 2021 in the Moderna Way Business Park car park in Mytholmroyd.

It is part of an ongoing collaboration between popular Halifax nightclub The Acapulco Club and LED screen specialists BIG-TV.

The New Year's weekend screenings follow successful Halloween and Christmas events, which were held in the Dean Clough car park, in Halifax town centre.

There will be three films played each day, with showings at 1pm, 4pm and 7.30pm.

On Friday, January 1 the films will be the classic Disney films Toy Story and The Lion King.

The last showing of the day will be Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible.

On Saturday, January 2, the films will be How to Train Your Dragon, Shrek and The Greatest Showman.

The Shrek showing will be subtitled to aid those hard of hearing.

Extra loud headphones will also be provided.

On Sunday, January 3, the showings will be Cars, Back to the Future and Fast and Furious.

Snacks and drinks can be ordered over the phone and delivered to people's cars, in a socially distanced manner.

Around 100 free tickets will be provided to NHS workers who hold a Blue Light Card.

The organisers are also offering free advertising to local businesses on the big screen during the film's previews.

Simon Woodcock, owner of The Acapulco Club and BIG TV, said: "2020 has been a very difficult year for everyone at the Acapulco Nightclub, we’ve had to make some very difficult decisions to protect the future of the business.

"With no idea when we’ll be able to open again, we wanted to do something to give back to the community and show our support to the people and other businesses in Halifax.

"The Acapulco Nightclub has always given free entry to NHS staff and blue light card holders.

"We’re aware that these key workers have been working so tirelessly and selflessly throughout this pandemic so we wanted to show our support and thanks to them for everything they’ve been doing.

"We also wanted to reach out to our Acca customers who we dearly miss and hope to welcome back through our doors when it’s safe to do so.

"This pandemic has been a huge struggle to so many people and had a massive effect on people’s mental health and wellbeing.

"We wanted to find a way to give something back to the people of Halifax, bring a little light hearted entertainment to families, couples and households in a way that allowed everyone to stay safe and socially distanced. What better than a drive-in cinema?

"To welcome in the New Year we’re excited to be working with Playtopia at Moderna Way Business Park and bring the UK’s first drive-in movie screening which will cater for a deaf and hard of hearing audience.

"We’re excited for what the future may hold and hope that we can continue our relationship with the venues we’re working with now and bringing these events to communities across West Yorkshire."

Tickets cost £25.00 per car - with a maximum of five people inside.
