Latvian couple settled in Calderdale sees business thrive through lockdown

Edgars Dubrovs and Daina Rozentale settled in the UK after leaving Latvia eight years ago.

They previously worked separate jobs to get by as they settled into their new life, before building a new business repairing, refurbishing and selling gardening equipment.

The pair now operate out of a mid-sized unit on Wellington Street West in Halifax, which also includes office space for Daina to handle the administrative side of the business while partner Ed tackles maintenance and repairs.

Daina said: “We originally lived in Devon, where we first set up Ed Garden Machinery, but the business rates were very expensive, and we saw an opportunity further north.

“Halifax appealed to us because we already had some friends here and there were some perfect premises available for us to rent out at reasonable rates.

“The whole idea started from just fixing old strimmers, but we saw potential for a business and it’s grown into something that allows us to make a living and work together.”

And while the Coronavirus pandemic has caused misery for many local traders and business owners, Ed and Daina have been able to capitalise on the opportunities presented.

“We sell quite often to professional gardeners, but also to many people who are just passionate about gardening, which is why the lockdown was actually a great opportunity for us,” Daina added.

“With many of the major stores forced to close, we were still able to process orders online and it’s no surprise that so many people have been keen to work on projects in their garden during the last few months.

“We now have hopes of opening a small showroom in the town centre and adding something a little different to the local high street.”

Ed and Daina have been supported in their ambitions by Brighouse-based Cooper Accounting.
