Catch Seafood cooks in the traditional way with beef dripping, and they offer haddock and cod, chips, spam fritters and fish cakes, as well as more exotic items such as tempura king prawns and halibut with dressed crab and poached lobster.

The judges were also impressed by their growth and community spirit.

After starting the year with just two staff members and the owner, they now have a team of 10, and also offer catering for events - one local bride was stuck for ideas for her wedding, but Catch were able to provide her guests a slightly off the cuff experience by serving up fish and chips and ice cream on the happy day.

The fish and chip shop on Victoria Mills beat thousands of other outlets across the Yorkshire and the Humber region including last year’s regional winner, Sakushi in Sheffield, to scoop not only the award but to win the £1,000 in prize money.

Katie Parkinson owner of Catch Seafood, said: “We came to the awards and we were very excited but we didn’t think we would win so it’s absolutely amazing.

“It means the whole world to us to win. We’ve put our heart and soul into Catch and it’s wonderful to get the recognition from both our customers and the takeaway industry.”

To determine the winner, each of the finalists were marked on a mystery shopping experience, and provided a submission on why they deserved to win.
