Home of 'Gentleman Jack' ranks among top places in Britain for women to prosper in business

Calderdale has earned a place on a list of the best places for women to work in the UK.

The study from SmartSurvey found the district, was ranked 13th in a list of places where women are likely to prosper in business.

In recent years, Calderdale has gained national attention because of the popularity of Sally Wainwright’s TV drama Gentleman Jack, which is based on the life of 19th century Halifax diarist Anne Lister.

Lister, who lived at Shibden Hall, was a pioneering mountaineer, intrepid traveller and entrepreneur.

The research from SmartSurvey analysed UK towns and cities on the gender wage gap, median annual earnings, women employed as a percentage of the total workforce and the number of women employed as managers, directors and senior officials.

The study found that 54.9 per cent of the workforce in Calderdale are women, and 16.2 per cent of women are employed as managers, directors and senior officials

Five of the top 10 spots were taken by London boroughs, with the capital having some of the best scoring locations for women in senior roles.
