Number of JSA claimants falls again

The number of people claiming Jobseekers Allowance in Calderdale has fallen again to 3,763.

The figure has fallen from last month’s number of 3,935 and represents 2.9 per cent of the borough’s population.

Ann Sykes, Jobcentre employment and partnership manager for Calderdale and Kirklees, said: “In Calderdale the figure is a fall of 1,871 in the year, a fall of 33 per cent.

“Included in that is youth unemployment, which has fallen by 590, which is 37 per cent in the year.

“We’ve worked hard with employers to provide opportunities for young people with work experience which then demonstrates they can turn up regularly for work and can be reliable, which has been very successful.

“The future is looking more rosy and there are a number of local employers who are expanding. We work with hundreds of small employers that are increasing their number of employees.”
