Reports of flooding in Calderdale following heavy downpour

Readers have been tweeting us photos of water gushing along the region’s roads following this afternoon’s torrential rain,

Kirstene Kettlewell tweeted a photo of flooding in Hove Edge, Brighouse and Mizzkittyfantastiko (@Kitty_Pickle) tweeted a photo of cars wading through water outside Boothtown Methodist Church, Halifax.

There have also been reports of flooding on Ovenden Road.

Motorists using the M62 are facing difficulty accessing and exiting the motorway around J26.

Cars have been reported to be turning round just past Wyke crossroads due to surface water on the roads.

But today’s heavy rain should give way to sunshine in time for the Halifax Agricultural Show tommorow (Saturday).

Sunny spells won’t last long, with heavy showers likely on Sunday, possibly becoming very wet and windy with persistent heavy rain.

A weather warning is place for the Yorkshire and Humber region on Sunday.

The yellow “be aware” warning is for Yorkshire and the Humber and is in operation from 12.15am to 11.45pm.

Residents are told to expect heavy rain and strong winds, which could lead to flooding.

A Met Office spokesperson said: “There is the potential for severe weather over much of the UK during Sunday as a depression tracks over, or close to, the UK. There continues to be a great deal of uncertainty in the forecast but the public should be aware of the risk of flooding due to heavy rain as well as very strong winds and large waves, particularly on the southern side of the depression.

“Given the unseasonable nature of the weather this could be sufficient to disrupt transport and make outdoor activities dangerous.

“This is a particularly volatile situation, and this alert is likely to be updated as the event approaches. The public are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts and alerts through the weekend.”
