Assistant Chief Fire Officer Steve Rhodes said: “The short but frequent periods of strike will pose a challenge for us, but safety is our priority when planning for such circumstances and this industrial action is no exception. The public of West Yorkshire can rest assured that our contingency arrangements mean we will provide the best cover possible.

“The communities of West Yorkshire have been very receptive in the past to our community safety campaigns and we ask them yet again to take extra care to ensure you and your families stay safe.”

Residents are urged to:

• not overload plug sockets

• stick to speed limits whilst driving.

• always wear a seatbelt.

• take regular breaks on long journeys – tiredness can kill.

• never drink and drive.

• not cook while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

• never leave cooking unattended, even for a moment.

• take pans off the heat and switch off appliances if you have to leave the kitchen.

• ensure cigarettes are always fully extinguished.

• never smoke in bed.

• always use a proper non-combustible ash tray – never a bin.
