Four members of the Brighouse Friends of Overgate Hospice have taken on an incredible walking challenge around the Isle of Wight.

Arthur, Pat, Irene and Angela, all aged over 70, set off on September 7 to take on their challenge of walking 70 miles in seven days in aid of Overgate Hospice.

Four members of the Brighouse Friends of Overgate Hospice have taken on an incredible walking challenge around the Isle of Wight.

The group followed a route around the Isle of Wight, travelling from Cowes to Yarmouth, Freshwater, Brighstone, Niton, Sandown and Ryde before making their way back to Cowes, and faced some torrential rain en route.

Despite the challenging conditions, the group refused to give in. The weather improved over the following days, allowing them to enjoy the beautiful scenery and meet some lovely people along the route.

One particularly special encounter came when they met a woman from the New Forest whose relative had been transferred from The Kirkwood to Overgate Hospice on the very first day that Overgate’s new Inpatient Unit opened.

"I think there were definitely a few moments when we wondered what on earth we were doing, but we kept going and, thankfully, I have a brilliant group of friends around me who are always willing to support my crazy fundraising ideas!,” said Angela.

“We all support Overgate in memory of my late husband Nigel, and other local families who have received care from the hospice when they needed it most. I know first-hand what an incredible difference Overgate makes to patients and their loved ones, and that is why raising money for the hospice means so much to all of us.

“I’m incredibly lucky to have such a great group of friends who are prepared to join me on these mad challenges. We’ve had aching legs, sore backs, rain, wind and plenty of laughs, but we’ve also made some fantastic memories along the way – and knowing that we’re raising money for Overgate makes every step worthwhile.”

The walkers also had to contend with diversions along the coastal route because of erosion, as well as some challenging hills.

By the end of the walk, the group had returned to West Cowes, where they began their challenge, having exceeded their 70-mile target and walked an impressive 84 miles.

The challenge was organised by the Brighouse Friends of Overgate Hospice, a dedicated group of supporters who have been raising money for Overgate for many years.
