Calderdale falls behind national average rating for its schools

Ofsted judgements for primary schools in Calderdale at the end of the 2018-19 academic year saw 84 per cent of primary schools, 69 out of the 82, rated as good or better – lower than the national average of 87 per cent.

Seventy seven per cent of secondary schools, ten out of 13, were rated as good or better, up on the 76 per cent nationally.

One hundred per cent of special schools in Calderdale were rated good or better, and the borough’s pupil referral unit was also judged to be good.

Overall 84 per cent of all Calderdale’s schools were rated as good or better.

Year end analysis shows results improving for the fifth consecutive year at Early Years Foundation Stage but scores are lower levels than nationally.

Areas of strength include GCSE results at Key Stage 4 level and improving trends in Early Years, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 education.

Areas where improvement is needed include Key Stage 5 – A-level and post-16 education – where despite some improvements overall Calderdale results are still below national level.

Early years education remains a priority to ensure children are “school ready.”

Schools are aware where improvements need to be made, members of Calderdale Council’s Children and Young People’s Scrutiny Board, have been told.
