“Fantastic Mr Burton” coming to Brighouse

Reading Matters is a Bradford-based charity that works with secondary students in Yorkshire and beyond to raise literacy standards.

Rachel Kelly, CEO of the charity said: “Intervention by our volunteer reading mentors and peer-to-peer reading leaders in the early stages of secondary school has been proven to have a positive effect on exam grades and employability.

“Often this is because it encourages young people to see reading as a pleasure rather than a chore which is why we’re so keen to get this message out there to all those working in education and training,” she said.

Dr Rachael Levy of the University of Sheffield will address delegates on the value of reading for pleasure and Marilyn Brocklehurst of the Norfolk Children’s Book Centre will give a talk on enticing readers “with the wonderful and unmissable”.

Other speakers include literacy advisor and grammar expert Lindsay Pickton, Sue Dixon of Thinking Child, Tricia Adams, Director of the School Library Association and Dr Marion Long of Rhythm for Reading.
