GCSE results 2014: King James’s School

Knaresborough school leavers are celebrating today after collecting their GCSE results.

King James’s School had another successful results day following the A Level success of last week and 71 per cent of students achieved five or more A* to C grades including English and Maths.

This was the second strongest exam performance at the school after the record success in 2013 of 76%.

The top performances at GCSE saw a number of students achieve 12 or more full GCSE grades at A* and A. They were Jack Barthorpe, Harry Brown, Chloe Goodall, Georgia Greenwood, Beaumont Hill-

Smith, Millie Howard, Kym Kestell, Alice Maccormack, Megan Pollard and William Urukalo.

Alice Maccormack from Starbeck achieved eight A*s and one A. She said: “I am most happy with my sciences marks as I want to study that at Alevel and then maybe medicince at University, I still don’t know.

“I have really enjoyed King James’s School and am going to stay for sixth form, everyone gets on really well.”

William Urukalo achieved 11 A*s and one A* distinction and two As and will go to Queen Ethelburga’s Sixth Form next year on a full scholarship.

He said: “I will miss King James’s, there is a lot going on here, I was in the debate club, I think it is important to do extra activities.”

Another student seeing stars was Jack Barthorpe who was awarded five A*s, one A* distinction and 4 As. He said: “It was a shock but I have worked hard and done a lot of revision.”

Headteacher Carl Sugden said “I am delighted that the hard work and effort from staff and students has led to another great set of GCSE results. This is my tenth year as a head teacher and the importance of the results day, for the future of the students, never diminishes.

“We approach the exams each year with a real focus on high achievement, and it can be a long wait until August for both students and teachers.

“It is the second time that our headline figure has been above 70 per cent and it shows that we have consistency in our results despite all the changes in the exam system.”

PE Teacher Ryan Bradshaw has been the Year 11 group’s head of year for three years. He said: “It’s always mixed emotions on the day, but we are very proud of them all.

“It is great to see everyone and to see their faces when they open their envelopes.”

Student Charlotte Amey was delighted with her C grade in maths.

“I passed maths! I can believe it! I was really worried about it. The best thign about King James’s is that you can see yourself progressing and getting better.”

Jackson Hobson, 16, will study performing arts at Sixth Form after acheiveing a distinction at GCSE level and eventually plans to go to drama school.

He said: “I got an A in PE which I was surprised at, I thought I was good at the physical side but not the classroom work but this shows I could do both well.”

The teen has starred in the King James’s school productions during his years at the school and won the school’s best actor award.

Another of the school’s thespians collecting GCSE results is Louise Henry, who played Maria in the school’s production of West Side Story.

She achieved two A*s four As and three Bs and said: “I got an A* in my English literature, I didn’t expect that, I am really happy.”

Chair of Governors, Dennis James, added his congratulations to the students. He said: “The school prides itself on working with all students on an individual basis to ensure that they achieve their potential. The governors would like to congratulate the students on their results and thank the staff for their hard work and commitment over the past year.”
