As well as being too small, the room has little daylight and storage and does not have running water.

While the school has managed to raise the majority of the funds to redevelop the space, through making cuts to other areas of the school budget and support from the council, there is still a £10,000 shortfall.

It’s now hoped an online crowdfunding campaign could help the school raise the vital funds it needs.

Matthew Hopkins, head teacher at the school, said: “We understand that we’re asking for donations in what is already a challenging financial environment for many.

“It’s one of the reasons why we’ve decided to go for a re-fit of ourexisting space rather than a whole new rebuild.

“I’m extremely proud, not just of the teaching and support team we have at St Mary’s but also of the een, hardworking, enthusiastic and unique individuals our pupils become.

“With the community’s support, being able to open our new classroom doors to Year 6 in 2017 would be an amazing achievement for us all.”

Parent Ben Green added: “The new Year 6 classroom won’t only benefit children moving into it next year but for many years to come.”

The school would also like to hear from businesses who may be able to provide materials and help reduce the overall project. If you could help, email [email protected]
