The 15 students, who are all in Year 12 at North Halifax Grammar School, went into school during their half-term break to complete the TEFL course.

It’s often taken by university students, but it’s hoped the qualification will be an extra string to students’ bows.

Jamie Downing, sixth form enrichment coordinator, said: “It’s giving them that extra opportunity if they want to take a gap year, or if they go to university and want to work during the summer break.”

Student Sophie Roberts said: “The chance to complete a TEFL course at my school means that I am one step closer to my dream gap-year of teaching English abroad after sixth form.

“As a keen foreign language learner I am fascinated in understanding the mechanics of language, and TEFL has provided a way for me to apply this to my own mother tongue.”

Maddie Jones added: “It was a great opportunity to learn a skill that isn’t taught through the normal school curriculum and even if I don’t want to pursue a career directly on that path it has given me a qualification and skills I can transfer to many other opportunities.”
