Joined by members of the Labour Party and Unison, the demonstration was aimed at sending a clear message to health chiefs - hands off our A&E.

The ongoing protests are in response to a report by health chiefs suggesting Halifax hospital could lose its accident and emergency ward.

The closure was put forward as a prefered option by the Calderdale and Greater Huddersfield Health and Social Care Strategic Review from a list of five proposals.

The preferred option would see Huddersfield Royal Infirmary provide around-the-clock A&E while Calderdale could lose its emergency unit.
