The move was backed by Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman who said he wants to see both towns retain their high class hospital services.

The motion states: “This house condemns the proposal to close the A&E department at Calderdale Royal Hospital”.

It goes on to mention that thousands of people have signed petitions against the suggestion and asks health bosses to think again about Calderdale A&E.

Mrs Riordan said: “We were promised consultation on this issue and then we hear that the trust already have a preferred option. I am not being threatened by these people, I want the A&E for the people of Calderdale”

Meanwhile Calder Valley MP Craig Whittakler said he will not be signing the EDM as there is no threat to the A&E unit. The Strategic Outline Case report states that there may be a minor emergency unit at Calderdale under the trust’s preferred option.

“The report says there will be some provision at both hospitals and therefore I will not be signing the EDM,” said Mr Whittaker.
