nPlans have been announced to knock down Calderdale College and replace it with a £51 million campus. The project will see a new building on the college’s Francis Street site, funded by the Learning and Skills Council. The college said the aim was to create a flexible building that could be changed as the curriculum changed, fit for the 21st century.

nA murder hunt has been launched after a teenager was stabbed in Brook Street, Todmorden. Alex Holroyd, aged 19, of Dineley Avenue, Todmorden, was found with serious injuries outside the town’s post office and died in hospital. Police believe Alex might have been targeted after a gang brawl some time ago. Three teenage men have been arrested.

nNurses evacuated elderly patients as fire threatened a ward at Northowram Hospital, Halifax. They wheeled 20 patients to safety as another nurse fought to control the blaze in nearby toilets and then comforted them until they were allowed back on the ward. Firemen believe the fire was started by a dropped cigarette end.

nSoap star Malandra Burrows has told how she nearly died when fire broke out in her bedroom. Malandra, who is playing the title role in the Halifax Civic Theatre panto Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, was staying with friends in Luddenden Foot when she dozed off with her electric blanket still on. She woke coughing and with eyes streaming from the smoke.

50 years ago

nHalifax men and women are being invited to “get in the swim” as part of a nationwide plan to reduce the number of cases of drowning. Classes at Park Road baths have started for the third year and there is no age limit. Last year’s class included a girl of 18 and a woman of 65, who both learned to swim in a very short time.

nTodmorden is Yorkshire’s only town with a public coffee bar to be built, organised and run by teenagers for teenagers. The man behind the Teens-bar is the Rev Trevor Dearing, who arranged the lease of two rooms near the town hall. Business is said to be booming in a town where the lack of facilities for young people has been criticised.
