A bumper charity ball at the Shay Banqueting Suite raised more than £13,000 for Help for Heroes.

The sell-out bash sponsored by Barclays Bank was enjoyed by 220.

But, the ball also had a more sombre section when diners reflected on the courage and sacrife made by our servicemen and women.

Dave Molloy was the driving force behind the event which developed from the tragic deaths of six soldiers - including five from the 3rd Yorks (Duke of Wellington’s Regiment) - killed in Afghanistan in March.

Mr Molloy said on hearing the news he wanted to fundraise for Help for Heroes and recruited the help of his friend and former soldier Richard Mellor.

The special guest was Corporal Simon Brown who was shot in the face while saving six comrades in Iraq in 2006.

He addressed the audience and as he was a recent torchbearer in Leeds, he also brought along his Olympic torch.

“It was a fantastic night and the feedback has been great,” said Mr Molloy.

“This was the first ball - and there will be a second next year.”
