The widow of a soldier killed in an IRA bomb blast is fund-raising for charity in his memory tomorrow.

Rita Martin is holding a free family fun day at St Mark’s Church, Siddal, from 2pm to 4pm, then a night at Siddal Ex-servicemen’s and Social Club from 8pm, where she will have her hair shaved off and auction off her locks.

Her husband Corporal Ian Metcalfe died aged 36 after a charity fun run in Northern Ireland in 1988.

He would have turned 60 on Tuesday – the day afterRita’s birthday.

Rita, who received the Elizabeth Cross last year, said: “All these years he had no gifts from me, he missed out on the children growing up and his five grandchildren.

“Ian’s birthday is the day after mine and I always spend part of the day feeling sad. This year we have the opportunity to turn this around and since he died after a charity run it’s fitting we hold a charity event in his honour.”

All proceeds will go to Macmillan. Anyone who wants to attend the evening event, sponsor Rita, or buy raffle tickets can email reetmartin@hotmail.co.uk
