Disgruntled parents have sent a petition to the Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, demanding that the Department for Education (DfE) stops any attempts to force Calder High School into becoming an academy.
The petition, signed by 345 stakeholders in the Mytholmroyd school, says that the undersigned don’t want their “community school of 60 years’ standing to be given away to an academy sponsor”.
Spokesperson June Eaton said: “This conversion is not wanted by the leadership team, governors, the local authority, the staff, pupils, parents or the local community.”
The petition demands that Mr Gove withdraws any decision to impose sponsored academy status and holds a full and thorough public consultation before any decisions on the issue are made.
It is understood that last week, the school was upgraded from “inadequate” to “requires improvement” by Ofsted inspectors.
