Calderdale Council has organised the Apprenticeship Live vacancy fair at The Shay Stadium to give young people the chance to meet employers and education providers, including Royal Sun Alliance and Covea.

Visitors can talk to current apprentices to learn about their experiences, and meet businesses, training providers and colleges.

The event takes place on Thursday June 30 from 3.30pm to 7.30pm and is aimed at the 16-18 age group. Parents and other relatives are also welcome to attend.

The Calderdale area scores highly in government statistics on apprenticeship take-up rates, with 86.9 per cent of 16-18 year-olds in the district participating in education or training, well above the national and regional averages.

By law, teenagers must now stay in full-time education or undertake an apprenticeship of training placement until their 18th birthday.

The council’s Cabinet member for children and young people Coun Megan Swift is encouraging school and college leavers to visit the careers event and find out about the opportunities available to them across a number of sectors.

“Apprenticeships are a fantastic way for people to gain valuable work experience while also continuing your studies. They can also lead to long-term employment, so they’re a great way to get a head start in your chosen career.

“This event will allow young people to potentially meet their future employer, and learn more about what being an apprentice is like. There’ll be plenty of useful information available as well as the chance to meet people who have already gone through the apprenticeship schemes, helping to give a real insight into what being an apprentice involves.”
