Arson attacks in Knottingley

Police are appealing for information following a series of arson attacks in the Knottingley area overnight.

Wakefield CID and the Pontefract and Knottingley NPT are investigating three linked incidents in which vehicles were targeted overnight and are appealing for witnesses.

In the first incident, officers were called to a skip firm on England Lane at about 8.30pm on Wednesday after a man broke into the compound and set alight three vehicles causing significant amounts of damage.

Officers and fire-fighters were later called to a car fire on Cow Lane at about 12.30am today (Thursday) in which the front tyre of a car was damaged by fire. The blaze was tackled relatively quickly and little damage was caused.

A third incident was reported at about 2am in which a car was set alight in a car park on Racca Green, leaving the car completely burnt out.

No-one was injured in any of the incidents all of which are being linked by officers.

Detective Inspector Michelle Martin of Wakefield CID, said: “Detectives and NPT officers are investigating these incidents today, all of which we believe are linked.

“While the attacks took place away from homes clearly the setting of fires in this way is a foolish, malicious and dangerous act and we would appeal for anyone who saw suspicious behaviour at any of these locations shortly before or after the incidents took place to contact Wakefield CID on 101 or CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.”

She added: “Neighbourhood Policing Team officers are patrolling in the affected areas today to offer reassurance to residents.”
