Asda launches scheme for closer community ties

ASDA is providing free room hire at its Halifax store for community groups.

The supermarket giant has launched its national Community Life scheme which aims to place its stores at the hub of neighbourhoods.

A dedicated space at the Thrum Hall store can be used for not-for-profit organisations including schools, health clubs, neighbourhood watch and community police events.

Store manager Karl Brown said: “We will be keeping an events calendar on our community life noticeboard so people are aware of the bigger events and those which are open to all.”

The store has appointed Amanda Goldsborough as its Community Champion who will host groups and build links with residents.

Mr Brown said the Community Life scheme will focus on a different topic each quarter including health, the environment, youngsters, and living and working in the local community.

“It’s an exciting development for us and we are ready for the challenge to invest time, labour and funds in our community,” he said.

Pupils from Mount Pellon School, who have been learning about food, attended the launch having been asked to design posters promoting healthy eating.

The Calderdale Upbeat Team, which is working with Asda to promote healthy eating and active lifestyles, also attended along with Coun Keith Hutson (Lib-Dem, Warley).

He said Asda’s altruistic support obviously included elements of self-interest but was welcome.

“There is nothing wrong with businesses being successful and the more successful they are the more employment for people,” he said.

“Asda has always been keen to contribute to the community and really make a difference to Park and Warley wards.

“I am pleased to support the national launch of the community initiative.”

Nationally, Asda has invested millions of pounds into its revamped community programmes built on four pillars: Local life by supporting families through volunteering and fundraising; working life by improving job prospects; healthier life by health awareness and providing health checks in-store; and greener life by creating awareness in providing cleaner, safer environments.
