The land, which covers approximately seven acres, was purchased in 1986 by four men with a joint dream. During the early years membership steadily rose from 30 to 50 and now stands at a little over 180 with 50 caravans on site..

Member John Luckman said: “To see the club now many older members are staggered.

“They bought the land, which was covered in undergrowth, brambles and scrub, after obtaining planning permission for change of use from an old clay mine from Calderdale Council.

“Imagine the work required to clear the land, lay roads and drains, erect 800 yards of fencing around the site, build a clubhouse and lay electric and water pipes.

“All the work was done at weekends and during holidays by our dedicated members over a period of years and on a very tight budget.

“As to the future who can tell? The ambition and drive is still there, kindled by the newer members with the full backing of all the members.

“The club often has visitors from all over the UK as well as Europe, New Zealand and Canada. The Ashdene experience is being exported all over the world.”
