INSPIRATIONAL members of the community have been recognised by Calderdale College.

Staff and students there have nominated Paralympic hopeful Hannah Cockroft, BBC Look North presenter Christa Ackroyd and charity devotee Mohammed Aslam for its annual Inspire Awards.

Wheelchair racer Hannah is the first Calderdale College student to be nominated for the award, for her services to sport.

She broke four world records in one day at last year’s British Wheelchair Athletics Association International, and is currently an IPC Athletics World Championships double gold medallist.

Christa Ackroyd, who started her career at the Courier, has been nominated for services to journalism and the community.

She was the country’s first female radio news editor and has supported local causes and organisations throughout her career.

Mohammed Aslam, MBE, BEM, has been nominated for his work with young people and the community.

He is chairman of the trustees of the Halifax Opportunities Trust, which helps people in Park ward, and also works with alternative education charity the Himmat Project.

The nominees will be presented with their awards at the college’s graduation ceremony at the Victoria Theatre, Halifax, on Saturday September 17.
