Best Foot Forward: Norwood Green and Lightcliffe

Commence the walk at the entrance to Judy Woods on Station Road. Go into Judy Woods and keep to the main footpath, which will eventually follow the path of  the stream to your left.

Keep following the footpath as it bears off on a sharp left. Follow the path as it crosses over a stream in 100 yards. Continue following the pathway for approximately a quarter of a mile.

At the end of the path you will come to a gate ­ turn left here, taking the old pack­ horse route, or the stone steps running alongside it. Continue walking down the pathway into the dip crossing over a bridge. Notice the information plaque on the right immediately before the bridge, explaining the legend of Judy North.

Fifty yards after the bridge the pathway forks -; keep to the left-­hand path going through the gap in the rough wall and continue walking uphill on the path. This path becomes a rough red brick path. Continue on the path through the field straight ahead towards the gate. Continue through the gate which leads into

another field to another gate. Be sure to go through the metal gate­ not the wooden gate.

At this point you can see Emley Moor straight ahead and St. Mary’s Church in Wyke in the distance. The path now becomes much fainter but head towards the houses, going through a gap in the fence, keeping to the left of the house with a conservatory.
Walk straight ahead on this unmade road between the houses. This brings you out onto Norwood village green. Walk past Hill End Farm and Hill End House to your left, and continue along this road.

You will emerge at the junction of Rookes Lane -­ observe the war memorial to your left. Walk down Rookes Lane for 250 yards;and you will pass a footpath sign to your left in another 10 metres ­ there are five stone steps in the wall to your left at the left-­hand side of a house called Rookes Garth.

Go up the steps which lead into a cricket pitch. Observe the pretty clubhouse to your right, and the views of the surrounding area in the distance. Walk around the perimeter of the cricket field until you come to the scorebox;.

Walk around the back of the box where you will see a footpath; - turn right on the footpath joining the Bronte Way;. Follow the path over two stiles and the cobbled railway bridge.

Walk over the fields down to the A58 opposite Nordgreen Nurseries. Walk straight across the busy A58 and follow the sign for the Calderdale Way towards Brighouse, which takes you through the field down the side of the nursery.

Continue through the field and go through the gap in the wall, continue straight ahead, keep to the perimeter field. In approximately 200 yards the footpath veers off to the left.

Continue on this path for a further 300 yards, passing a stream on your left. Go over the wooden stile straight ahead and continue along the footpath, going over a footbridge and crossing a steam.

Here two pathways intersect;- turn to your right and take the right­hand pathway. After 100 yards you go over a small bridge and through a metal gatepost way.

Continue straight ahead through the field, which terminates at a wooden gate leading into Ripley Street.
Follow Ripley Street to the end, turn right onto Wakefield Road (A649); walk on for 400 yards passing King Georges Field on the right and the Sun Inn on the left. Continue for another 500 yards until you see a sign on your right for Lightcliffe Cricket Club.

Walk down this narrow pathway between the houses which leads into the club. 

Retrace your steps back to Wakefield Road for 600 yards and turn left just after the graveyard down Till Carr Lane. Immediately past Till Carr Cottage on your left is a small gap by a gate;- go through this gap and onto the faint footpath.

Walk to the end of the field and over the metal gatepost. You now come to the end of Ripley Street again. Retrace your steps back along the footpath, all the way back to where the footpaths intersect.

Bear off to your left, heading back over the footbridge and stile marked Brighouse Boundary Walk, and back to the A58.

Turn right walking down the A58 towards the viaduct. Continue to its junction with Huddersfield Road, turn left up Huddersfield Road, and continue until you come to the junction of Station Road. Turn left down this road to the point where you started the walk.
