A PAIR of school rugby teams will take their quest for national glory to London, if they can raise £12,000 in sponsorship.
The two teams from Brooksbank Sports College, Elland, will do battle in two national finals, just two days apart, in not one, but two Yorkshire derby’s.
The Year 10 team will take to the pitch at The Stoop, home of Harlequins on August 26 in their third consecutive national final.
The 17-strong squad will face Sirius Academy from Hull.
The following day, the Year 7 Rugby League team will play at Wembley in the curtain raiser to the Challenege Cup at Wembley on August 27.
Their squad of 17 will play South Leeds High.
PE teacher Damian Ball said: “It’s something they’re never going to forget. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This will really put the school on the map,” he said.
“A lot of big names go on to Super League and rugby league have played in the curtain raiser first,” said Mr Ball.
Both teams had narrow losses to the same teams in the Yorkshire championship finals earlier this year. In April the Year 7 team lost 26-22 and the Year 10s were beaten 32-22.
“We’re hoping that makes us a bit of a danger. We can just shock them,” he said.
But they need to raise £12,000 in sponsorship before their trips and hope local businesses will get behind them and offer their young sporting heroes support. To offer support call the school on 01422 374791.
