Bogus email warning

Fraudsters are targeting customers of a well known high street bank.

The scam involves a bogus email, which is addressed to ‘Dear Valued Customer’ and states ‘due to a technical update we recommend you reactivate your account by clicking on the link’.

West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service says that the sender does not know the customer’s name and although the link does lead to a professional looking website, with the bank’s logos and colours, there is a slight variation on the web address to the one used by the bank, which has not been identified.

Scammers are hoping that customers will not notice the difference and will tap in their account number and sort code, to verify personal details. Trading Standards is urging consumers to be suspicious of any email claiming to be from a bank, especially if it features a link and asks for any verification of personal information.

Chief officer Graham Hebblethwaite said: “As a general rule banks will not send out emails to customers, and certainly will not ask for your account details via email. If you get an email that you are suspicious of then just delete it or call your bank to check whether it is legitimate.”
