Book of condolence opened for Bradford Jesus Man

However, Geoffrey Brindley, known to thousands by the moniker Bradford Jesus Man, has died at the age of 88.

The colourful eccentric has been an almost permanent fixture along road sides in the region since 1960, wandering the streets dressed as a monk and wearing sandals.

Mr Brindley’s lifestyle was apparently inspired by his having spent several days living alone in a cave in the Yorkshire Dales. He resided in Baildon near Bradford but was known to walk for miles at a time, often being spotted around Leeds, Keighley and Halifax.

The news of his death prompted sadness across Bradford, with the city’s cathedral opening a book of condolence in his memory.

Coroner’s officers in Bradford have appealed for any relatives of Mr Brindley to get in contact.

Mr Brindley died at Bradford Royal Infirmary on Monday following a fall at his home in Langley Lane, Baildon. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

Mr Brindley was born in the Buxton area and it is possible that he still has relatives living in that area or elsewhere in the country.
