The opening speaker, director of social engagement for Calder High, Jan Healey, spoke of how the school has resisted becoming an academy because it would like to run using the co-operative principles of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy and community solidarity.

Karen Bell, from business and skills at Calderdale Council, then reported how, since the withdrawal of funding for work experience, she has set about to encourage local business to fund such experience either by paying for transport, giving time or expertise for those in most need.

The next meeting of the Mytholmroyd business breakfast will take place on May 10 at 8am at Calder High School. For more information email [email protected].
