Thousands of jobs axed

Thomas Cook and bedding firm Dreams are the latest casualties on the High Street.

Both are shedding jobs and both have interests in Calderdale.

Thomas Cook - which includes Co-operative Travel - is cutting 2,500 British jobs and closing 195 travel agencies.

Staff were being told today which shops are to be closed.

Thomas Cook has shops at Cornmarket, Halifax, and Commercial Street, Brighouse.

There are Co-operative Travel shops at Princess Street, Halifax, and Commercial Street, Brighouse.

And bed retailer Dreams, which employs over 2,000, has gone into administration.

Administrators Ernst & Young hopes to save nearly 1,700 jobs with the sale of some stores to the owners of sofa firm ScS.

Deams has a store at the Victoria Retail Park, Shroggs Road, Halifax.

Last summer Thomas Cook announced the closure of its regional office in Bradford which employed over 500.

And, High Street job casualties this year are said to be running at 6,000 with failed firms including HMV, Jessops, Republic and Blockbuster.
