A group of 30 young adults with learning difficulties from the employability and life skills course, along with students from across the college, have contributed to the rug.

Teacher Catherine Nethercoat said: “It’s a rag rug in the pattern of a poppy, about 1m round.

“It will have taken about three weeks to do, but students have been able to pick it up and put it down so it’s been easy for everyone to contribute.

“It not only helps to show the value of teamwork but the history side of it.

“We’ve had students researching the Armistice, and we’re having an exhibition of our own on Armistice Day, with a two minute’s silence.

“For that, we’ve created a waterfall of poppies made out of paper, similar to the one at the Tower of London.

“It’s surprising how much the students already know about it all.”
