Poignant services will be held across Calderdale on Remembrance Sunday as thousands of people pay tribute to those who lost their lives in conflict.

The Mayor and Mayoress of Calderdale, Coun John Hardy and Janet Hardy, will join those assembling at Halifax Town Hall at 10am before a parade led by the boys and girls’ brigade band proceeds to the cenotaph for an act of remembrance.

There will then be a Remembrance Day service at Halifax Minster at 11.15am, attended by members of the Halifax Royal British Legion and army veterans and cadets.

The Vicar of Halifax, Hilary Barber, said: “Each year’s service becomes more poignant, but especially this year with the homecoming for the Yorkshire Regiment The Dukes on December 4.

“Of course we remember those who died during the two world wars but it’s not just thinking about the past but the present too and how these men and women have helped secure our safety.”

Pauline Dawson, treasurer of the Halifax Royal British Legion, said: “It’ll be very emotional. I have a son who has served in the air force for 19 years so I’ll be thinking of him and everyone still serving.”
