Calderdale top of the table for recycling

Recently released figures show that Calderdale continues to lead the way in recycling in the region, with a household waste recycling rate of over 60 per cent.

It is the only authority in Yorkshire and Humber that is recycling over 60 per cent of waste, and is in the top ten authorities for recycling rates nationally.

The council’s cabinet member for regeneration and economic development, Coun Barry Collins, said: “It’s fantastic news that Calderdale continues to top the charts for recycling in Yorkshire and Humberside. We’ve also been recognised nationally for our impressive rate, retaining our top ten position for authorities across England.

“We’ve worked hard to achieve this rate, but we couldn’t have done it without the efforts of Calderdale residents, so I’d very much like to thank them for their continued commitment to recycling.”

The waste collection and recycling service in Calderdale has been operated by SUEZ (formerly known as SITA) since 2008.

During this time it has evolved from a black bag, back door collection system to encompass wide ranging recycling opportunities.

SUEZ has recently been awarded the contract to deliver Calderdale’s waste collection service until 2024 and from August 2016, residents will see the introduction of a wider range of recyclable material.

Waste and recycling is a priority for the council. The last five years have also seen a reduction in the amount of waste going to landfill, with less than 17 per cent of waste now ending up in a landfill site.

Coun Collins added: “We won’t be resting on our laurels - we will strive to keep improving. The newly renewed contract with SUEZ will help us do this, and throughout next year we’ll be introducing more recycling options and new technology to help us recycle as much as possible and keep waste away from landfill sites.”
