A 40-year-old man hanged himself with his dressing gown belt, an inquest decided.
Shaun Henry Kew, of Ashenhurst Road, Todmorden, died at his home last June.
The hearing was told that the drug temazepam was found in the room – along with lager he had bought earlier that day.
Mr Kew was found by police and his sister, Beverley Fielden.
The inquest heard that Mr Kew had been worried he may have been suffering from lung cancer – the same disease that had claimed his father's life.
He had undegone a biopsy on June 26 to find out if he was suffering from the illness.
The verdict was suicide.
