When Susan and John Fisher met at a boarding house, little did they know that it would be the first step on the stairway to 50 years of wedded bliss.
The couple, who have three children and five grandchildren, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last Friday.
They began their courtship in 1962 after passing each other on the stairs of the boarding house they both lived in.
Susan, 69, said: “We met on the stairs, got talking and we just clicked.”
The pair courted until 1964, when they were married at York Registry Office on August 1.
After living in York for four months, John secured a job as a lorry driver with Joe Dean & Sons in Greetland and the newlyweds relocated to Elland.
When asked the secret of a long-lasting marriage, Susan and John said: “You have to talk things through. Never go to sleep on an argument and don’t bear grudges.”
The couple celebrated with a party at the Fleece, Elland and instead of presents, a donation of £300 was given to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service.
