Channel 4 drama filmed in Halifax led the way at television awards

Poppy Lee Friar scooped the award in the Actor category; Penny Woolcock took home the Director: Fiction prize; Tim Phillips triumphed in the Music and Use of Music segment and the series won the Drama award (sponsored by York St John University).

The weekly drama was filmed in and around Calderdale earlier this year and is currently airing on Tuesday nights on Channel 4. The show centres around a diverse, fictional Yorkshire school and the lives of the teachers, students and their families.

BBC East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire’s Look North scooped two awards: with Phillip Norton winning best News Or Current Affairs Reporter and Peter Levy taking home the Presenter award; while BBC Yorkshire’s Look North won both best News Or Current Affairs Story for House Prices and best News Programme for Manchester Arena Bomb.

In the Documentary Series category, True Vision Yorkshire won with Catching a Killer (Channel 4); while the Single Documentary award went to Handmade in Hull (BBC Four). The Factual Entertainment & Features gong went to Shiver for Elton John: The Nation’s Favourite Song (for ITV) and in the Low Cost Factual category Air Television took home the gong for 999 Rescue Squad (for UKTV).

In the four Professional Excellence awards, Slung Low’s production team scooped the award for Flood: To the Sea in the Drama & Comedy Production segment; while Mammoth Screen’s Dubbing Mixers James Ridgway and Gareth Bull won theDrama & Comedy Post Production award for their work on Victoria 2 for ITV.

In the Professional Excellence: Factual Post Production category, The Yorkshire Vet Post Production Team (Daisybeck Studios for Channel 5) triumphed; while Catching a Killer: The Search for Natalie Hemming (True Vision Yorkshire for Channel 4) took home the Factual Production prize (sponsored by Individual Restaurants).

This year’s Animation award went to Troy Story (Fettle Animation for The Open University); while Charlie Swinbourne won the Writer award for Deaf Funny (Juggle / BSLBT, Community Channel / BSLBT); Larry and Paul: The Newsreader Nightmare (BBC and Online) received the Promotion or Commercial Production gong and My Glasto Lineup (Joi Polloi / BBC Creative for BBC) took home the Second Screen Award.

Air Television’s work was recognised with the Independent Spirit award (sponsored by Channel 4 Nations & Regions) and the One To Watch prize (sponsored by Daisybeck Studios) went to Kerry Maule of Made in Leeds.

The RTS Yorkshire 2018 Outstanding Achievement Award for contribution to television in Yorkshire was presented to Screen Yorkshire Chief Executive Sally Johnson.
