A charity will raise vital awareness about homelessness with an innovative fundraising event this month.
Calderdale SmartMove has organised the ‘Under 1 Roof’ sleep out event at the Shay and organisers are hoping that as many people as possible will turn out to make the event, which is being sponsored by Ploughcroft, a huge success.
Craig George, fundraising manager at the charity, said: “This will be the biggest event in our history and the plan is to get 100 people, or more, to sleep out for the night with a target of raising £100 each, which would raise £10,000 and help to pay for refurbishment of our new premises.
“We have outgrown demand and our current building is just not fit for purpose. With the cuts to housing benefits and the migrant crisis we’re going to be busier and busier.”
The night, on November 13, will be overseen by staff from the stadium in Halifax and first aiders will be in attendance throughout.
SmartMove helps homeless and vulnerably housed people by securing sustainable homes and developing services to address their needs, including learning and training programmes.
Its ultimate aim is to empower people to live independently and to give them the skills to maintain their tenancies successfully.
Recently, the Community Foundation for Calderdale’s research project ‘Vital Signs’ showed an increase of 45 per cent in statutory homelessness in Calderdale and that three charities in the borough had supported nearly 300 people in one year.
